I am not sure that all Native English speakers speak 'standard' English. First, which 'standard' to follow - British RP (Received Pronunciation). BrEng (British English ) or GA (General English) or any of the other standards used in the other Native English Speaking countries like Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada? I have read (David Crystal) that only 3 to 5% of the British population speak in RP, Oxford or the Queen's English accent which most label as 'standard' British pronunciation. The rest use from 50+ other varieties of English pronunciation. Now. both BBC and ITV employ broadcasters who speak local dialects. As for intelligibility of the so called standard Oxford accent, once when Oxford dons were speaking at a EU meeting, interpreters had to be called in as many could not understand these highly educated professors speaking 'standard' English.
